Use those leftover Mason jar lids to make these super-simple suncatcher Mason jar lid crafts that are the perfect craft project for kids for any time of year!
We’ve really been loving our solar system suncatcher, so for this project, we thought we’d try to make another suncatcher project that was even easier and much faster.
Melted crayon suncatchers are a great way to use up old crayons and make something beautiful and new. Sun travels beautifully through melted crayon and wax paper, and these suncatcher mason jar lid crafts could not be easier to make.

Mason Jar Lid Crafts: Melted Crayon Suncatchers
Follow these simple directions to make your own suncatcher Mason jar lid crafts. They make excellent gifts!
What you’ll need:
- Mason jar lids (you can buy just the lids!)
- Crayon shavings
- Wax paper
- String
- Pencil
- Scissors
- Glue
- Iron
First, cut two squares of wax paper slightly bigger than your mason jar lids.
Next, sprinkle crayon shavings onto one of the squares in a circular pattern. We found it was easiest to lay the mason jar lid over the square and sprinkle the shavings inside of the jar lid.
Place the second layer of wax paper over the shavings.
Iron the shavings with an iron set to low heat for about 5 seconds. Don’t do it too long or your crayons will melt too much and get everywhere.
Use a pencil to draw a circle around the outside of the mason jar lid (use the side that doesn’t have ridges).
Cut out the circle of crayon shavings.
Tie a string to the top of the jar lid so you can hang it from a window.
Gently push the circle of melted crayon inside the jar lid. If you cut it the right size, it should nestle inside the jar lid perfectly. If it doesn’t quite fit, use a dab or two of glue to secure the suncatcher.
Hang your suncatcher from a window that gets a lot of sun.
If you like, you can also use these suncatchers as Christmas ornaments. The simple design is so fun and reflects Christmas lights with a soft, glowing light.
