If you are looking for easy preschool activity ideas, you can’t go wrong with this super-simple button match activity for preschoolers! Preschoolers will love matching the correct number of buttons with each felt number. This is a perfect no-prep STEM activity!
Bo loves anything to do with buttons or counting. For this button activity, I thought to combine her two loves so she can start to learn number recognition.
We love button activities that don’t take much set-up or supplies, which is why this activity is so simple! If you have buttons and some numbers, you’re ready to go!
Button Number Match for Preschool
What you’ll need for the button number recognition activity:
- Felt numbers (although any numbers will work)
- Buttons
For this activity, I gave Bo a felt letter. She then looked for buttons that not only matched the correct number, but also that matched (more or less) the color of the felt number.
She loved the scratchy feel of the numbers and the hunt for buttons through our button bin.
During this activity, we solidified counting skills, number recognition, and color recognition. This activity was a lot of fun for both of us. We had a lot of fun counting together and hunting the correct color of button to use for each number.
We even had a discussion on what colors of buttons were close enough in color to the felt number to allow it to be used.
The best part about this activity is that it is completely portable. It would make a great busy bag activity if you pre-separated the necessary number and color of buttons. Bo was content to do this activity for about 30 minutes.
You can even turn this button match activity into a math activity for advanced preschoolers or kindergarten kids. Use the numbers and buttons to add or subtract.
You can also use this activity as a tens and ones number activity for kindergarten kids.
