When I go out for a drive this time of year, I see fields of corn ready to harvest, hay bales ready for the barn, and giant, yellow sunflowers.
The sunflower has always been a favorite flower of mine thanks to its cheerful yellow color and giant blossoms. The sunflower isn’t a particularly beautiful flower, but I love it because it represents the end of summer and the start of my favorite season.
I knew we had to try a sunflower craft this year to celebrate the end of summer and start of fall. The addition of black glue makes this sunflower craft simple, creative, and tons of fun!
Kids of all ages will love expressing their creative side with this black glue sunflower craft. It’s the perfect early fall craft for the classroom, daycare, or home.
Hang a bunch of these on your classroom wall for a cheery transformation that will make everyone smile as they walk by.

Note: If you can’t find black glue sold in your local store, you can make your own by adding black food coloring to regular white school glue. This is how we made our black glue, and it was super easy! Just add the dye and mix it up!
- Draw the outline of a sunflower to use as a template.
- Cut out as many sunflowers as you need. You will need one per child.
- Glue the yellow sunflower outline to a piece of green paper.
- Outline the sunflower in black glue.
- Add dots to the center of the flower to make the sunflower seeds.
- Set aside and let dry.
- Once dry, draw the sunflower stem on the paper and it’s done! Display with pride until it’s acceptable to decorate with fall leaves (typically around October).
