What is the Difference Between STEM and STEAM?

You know that we do both STEM activities and STEAM activities here at STEAMsational.

But what is the difference?

In general, there isn’t a whole lot of difference, except that in a STEAM activity, there is more emphasis placed on the artistic or design part of the process, and in a traditional STEM activity, the only artistic part of the activity is in the engineering design phase.

Basically, the idea of STEAM came along once teachers realized that the arts were getting displaced in favor of science programs. A STEAM activity recognizes the importance of the arts in addition to sciences and tries to incorporate elements of both.

You can make almost any craft have a STEM element by discussing themes like color theory, symmetry, balance, light, and the math of design.

For most kids, ensuring that there is a healthy mix of hands-on science experiments and hands-on art activities is enough to cover the bases of STEM and STEAM.
