Mardi Gras Slime Science
Mardi Gras slime recipes are about more than just having fun with stretchy, slimy slime. Slime is a wonderful way to help children foster a love of science and chemistry.
Slime is formed when a chemical reaction between materials in the glue and the boron in the laundry starch or borax.
This reaction alters the chemical bond of the materials, combining them into long polymer chains. This process is similar to how most flexible plastics are made today.
We make a Mardi Gras version of slime because it’s a fun way to combine science and sensory experiences with Fat Tuesday!
Tips for Making Mardi Gras Slime

We will not make slime unless we have Elmer’s glue on hand, Good food coloring (that’s a brand we love), and Sta-flo laundry starch (unless we’re making an unusual slime recipe, like taffy slime).
While there are other ways to make slime, like with Borax powder and baking soda (we’ve never gotten contact lens slime to work), laundry starch slime is by far our favorite, and we will always recommend using it above any other recipe.

How to Make Mardi Gras Slime Step-by-Step
Follow these steps to make your own Mardi Gras slime.
For this recipe, you’ll need three containers, one with purple, one with green, and one with yellow.
Follow these directions for each of your colors of slime.
Mix 1 part glue with 1 part water.
Add glitter.
Add one part starch to the mixture, but add it slowly, stirring the whole time. In some cases, you won’t need to add all the starch to get the slime to form.
Adding too much starch will make it stringy, which you can learn more about in our slime troubleshooting guide.
At first, the slime will be a bit sticky, but as you stretch it, it will relax and get less sticky.
