What is Fluffy Slime All About?
Fluffy slime recipes are about more than just having fun with stretchy, gooey slime. Slime is a wonderful way to help children foster a love of science and chemistry.
The Science of Fluffy Rainbow Slime
Slime is formed when a chemical reaction between materials in the glue and the boron in the laundry starch or borax.
This reaction alters the chemical bond of the materials, combining them into long polymer chains.
This process is similar to how most flexible plastics are made today. Making a variety of slimes is also a good STEM activity experimenting with how different ingredients react to make a variety of slime textures.
Slime is also wonderful for kiddos who are sensory seeking, particularly for kids with SPD, autism, and ADHD.

If you’re in a bit of a rush though, just remember that brands matter when making slime.
We will not make slime unless we have Elmer’s glue on hand, Good food coloring (that’s a brand we love), and Sta-flo laundry starch (unless we’re making an unusual slime recipe, like taffy slime).
While there are other ways to make slime, like with Borax powder and baking soda (we’ve never gotten contact lens slime to work), laundry starch slime is by far our favorite, and we will always recommend using it above any other recipe.

Why is My Slime Sticky?
Sticky slime usually means you don’t have enough activator. Try adding a bit more.
If that doens’t work, you may need to add something dry, like cornstarch, to help reduce how sticky your slime is. I like to add either cornstarch or shaving cream to eliminate stickiness.
If you can’t get enough of this fluffy rainbow slime, try our lucky coin slime or solid gold slime! Read on to learn how to make your very own rainbow fluffy slime.
Why is My Slime Watery?
If your slime is watery, you may not have enough activator! Try adding more and stir and see what happens. If it’s still watery, you may need to add a little more glue!

How to Make Awesome Rainbow Slime
If you need help with the recipe, check out our basic laundry starch slime recipe. And if you’re still stumped, check out our slime troubleshooting guide.
For this slime recipe, you’ll want to have six containers for mixing your slime- one for each color.
You can use disposable cups, mason jars, or bowls, but if you use disposable cups, you can just throw them away and you don’t have to clean!
In each cup, you’ll want to put in one color of the rainbow (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, or purple), one part glue, and one part shaving cream.
Sometimes I double the amount of shaving cream for two parts, but sometime’s that’s a bit much.

Fluffy Rainbow Slime Recipe
Once your shaving cream and glue is mixed, it’s time to add the starch (you can also use contact lens solution if it contains a form of boron or boric acid).
Add starch slowly and keep mixing. If you add it all at once, the starch will be stringy, so add it a bit at a time. Once the slime is no longer sticky, you’ve added enough starch!
Stretch and play with the slime and have a rainbow of color to play with!
Pinch off small pieces to make a rainbow. When you mix them, the colors will slowly mix over time, but fluffy slime mixes more slowly than other colors.
And if you let a bunch of fluffy rainbow slime sit for a while, it looks like this!
