First graders have so much wonder about the world still, and yet, they are also big enough to really learn some basic science concepts!

During the Halloween season, I always like to bring in some seasonal STEM fun with my first graders so that they can complete Halloween STEM activities in an age-appropriate way.

How to Do Halloween STEM Activities in 1st Grade

First grade STEM activities introduce scientific concepts and scientific thinking.

A first grader won’t be able to do extended scientific discoveries and tasks, but they can learn to ask a question and find an answer.

Depending on how much help you have in the classroom, you may use a lot of these first grade STEM activities as science demonstrations, rather than allowing the kids to explore the materials themselves.

This can cut down on mess, but when possible, I always encourage young kids to do their own experiments.

Things can get messy, but it’s well worth the knowledge they gain in my opinion!

Once October is over, there is plenty of time to go back to regular creative STEM activities!

What You Need for 1st Grade Halloween STEM Activities

When you are doing Halloween STEM activities with kids, you’ll need some fun spooky items in addition to regular basic STEM activity supplies.

You’ll want to have either large plastic trays (I use this kind), a sensory table, or official STEM bins to put your activities in.

For Halloween specifically, you will probably want some Halloween figures like plastic bugs, eyeballs, or Halloween mini toys.
